The History of the Pitchforks

David Lawhead

Being a part of the Pitchforks is not just fun but is a great chance to share what we love with others

The St. Petersburg High School Pitchforks are well-known inside and outside of school. They are an acapella music group that performs at school events such as football games, concerts, holiday celebrations, and so much more. There are a total of 9 girls in the group, ages 15-18.  Though it is unknown specifically when Pitchforks actually started, they’ve been around for more than 90 years. To this day, they are an important part of St. Pete High’s artistic culture. The Pitchforks are led by the school’s chorus teacher David J. Lawhead. He’s been teaching at St. Pete High for 17 years now. When he first started teaching at SPHS, he heard about the Pitchforks, which drove him to revive the group after they disbanded in 1987 when IB came to the school. “I heard about them after I started at St. Pete in 2005, so I revived them in the 2006-2007 school year,” Lawhead states.

The Pitchforks sometimes would sing at class reunions in the 1950s. There are times when someone from the reunion would be a former Pitchfork from years and years ago. Such a nice and pleasant experience to have. The current members are Mallory Holden, Campbell Miller, Joanna Samuels, Syncyera Wisdom, Jocelyne Lioe, Peyton Graham, Julia Mara, Pichanokk Saengtes, and Taliya Smart. Being a part of the Pitchforks is not just fun but is a great chance to share what we love with others. We love to sing and bring joy to St. Pete High through our love of music.
