Year on Review: Green Devil Traditions!
If you know anything about St. Petersburg High School, it’s that we take our events seriously. Here at SPHS, there are always new and exciting things to do where students, families, and staff get to join together and express themselves while enjoying the work of others. Here’s a breakdown of the favorite events from this school year!
We start off strong with one of our more recent productions: Goldfever! Goldfever is a show where the SPHS service clubs join together to create a performance full of music, dancing, skits, and more, all while competing for awards like “Overall Winner,” “Critics’ Choice,” and “Fan Favorite.” Although Goldfever has been a classic event for 40 years, it never ceases to amaze. It was “by far the most entertaining” of this year’s events, says Joy Santiago, a member of Key Club. The effort put into the show was extremely impressive, and according to Santiago, “all of the clubs had their own special ideas,” making it a creative outlet for everyone involved. For the 2022-23 school year, Goldfever will be remembered with Leo’s “Overall Winner” award, Key’s “Critics Choice” award, and Interact’s “Fan Favorite” award. Whether it was Rojans dancing to “Lip Gloss,” or Interact’s charismatic “Oops!…I Did It Again” bit, this year’s peppy and amusing Goldfever was one for the books.
While on the subject of service clubs, I’d like to touch base and recognize all the work our service clubs put in this school year to contribute to the school. Santiago says, “When [she] first joined Key, it was quite daunting being surrounded by so many upperclassmen, but [she] soon found out the atmosphere was warm and welcoming.” Since her start in Key Club, she has been able to participate in the curation of homeless meals, as well as community work like trash cleanups and donation projects. All of the service clubs at SPHS have contributed greatly to the upkeep of our school’s morale, and it continues to provide a place for students to express themselves. Junior Sophie Slager talks about the excitement of tapping, saying that “tapping is a very fun and exciting experience for bringing in new inductees to help us improve the community and unite the Rojans sisterhood.”
Another event to remember was this year’s homecoming! Homecoming was an all-inclusive event, and everyone from freshmen to seniors could attend. Homecoming this year had a theme of ‘Hoco Hollywood.’ This entailed a red carpet walk, a spinning camera, photoshoots, and even cornhole. It had every element of a great homecoming, and the music in the gym made for a great dance floor.
Of course, Homecoming was not a one-and-done event. The football games building up to it were just as memorable. From the very beginning of this year’s football season, our players have been bringing their all, but the Homecoming game was extra special. Not only was the anticipation of the dance awaited, keeping everyone on their toes, but the homecoming court and the overall sensations of the game were unforgettable. Kirra Adamosky, a freshman, says, “Homecoming court and the feel of family that surrounded the field made [her] feel at home.”
Lastly was the fall play, “The Butler Did it, Again!” This play was certainly a kickstart to the 2022-23 school year. The work put in was conveyed through the play’s outcome. The set design, the music, the lights, and directing were all there, and for a play that was set to stage so soon into the school year, its outcome was a true wonder.
These are just a few events, but there are many more that were just as influential. St. Pete High School always will pull through with indulging events that capture its audience, and I can’t wait to see what it has in store for next year!!
