The most anticipated time of the year has finally arrived, and with it, a bundle of seasonal activities and traditions. Yet, perhaps the most notable event of the holidays is the return of Christmas music. On December 1st, millions worldwide shuffle their Christmas playlist for the first time in 365 days, marking the start of the holiday season. According to Katz Radio Group, 78% of adults listen to Christmas music, which begs the question: As a society that so strongly disagrees on the leading genre of music, what makes us temporarily unite for one month out of the year? Is Christmas music just that good, or is there a hidden meaning behind it?

I tend to split holiday music into two main categories: classic and contemporary. The classics range from ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ by Mariah Carey to ‘Last Christmas’ by Wham!, while the classics feature popular pop artists such as Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, and Justin Bieber. My playlist, like many others, incorporates a blend of the two. Together, they create the perfect cozy atmosphere for decorating the tree, stringing lights around the house, and sitting by the crackling fire drinking hot cocoa. However, I asked fellow SPHS students to gather more information on what makes these holiday anthems so special. Senior Val Travilinga notes that Christmas music “reminds [her] of growing up in Italy, where it’s a big tradition”. In Italy, the Christmas season is rooted in cultural and religious significance, so for Val, the Christmas classics “feel like home, a time of warmth, coziness, and joy”. Fellow senior Sofia Carranza concedes this feeling of nostalgia, as the seasonal tunes remind her of “different memories with [her] family friends”, providing her with “a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the holiday season”. 

All in all, it appears Christmas music extends beyond merely a catchy tune– it serves as the gateway to cherished memories and traditions, carrying the magic of childhood traditions into adulthood. This holiday season, let the familiar holiday tracks serve as a comforting reminder: the true holiday spirit lies in the ability to connect the community and celebrate our shared importance of faith, family, and friends.
