Teacher of the Year is an honorable award for any educator, and St. Pete High is no exception. This year’s teacher of the year is…drumroll please…the one and only…Ms. Green!! Ms. Green is a well-known English teacher and basketball cheer coach at SPHS. She has been teaching at St. Pete High for five years and was a sub years before. When asking her why she thinks she won Teacher of the Year, she says it’s “because of [her] relationship with [her] students and coworkers.” Students say that she is very interactive, compassionate, and respectful towards everyone, and she deserves this award more than anyone.
To many, English is a controversial subject. Some love it, some hate it, but English teachers see the subject through a different eye. To them, it’s more than just a language. “Out of all subjects, it’s the one that is going to be used most,” says Ms. Green, “it plays a part in daily conversations, and overall, life itself.” Seeing a teacher passionate about her subject gives students an incentive to care about it- not just for the grade, but the benefits, too. Additionally, she says that her favorite part of teaching is the kids, coaching cheer, clubs, and lunchtime chaos. (It can be hectic, but that’s the fun part!)
When asking Ms. Green how she felt after winning, she admits that she was surprised she won. Not because she thought she wasn’t worthy of it, but because of the recognition that comes with it. “It feels nice to be recognized,” she says, “but I was definitely shocked when I won.” Her kindness has clearly taken her a long way in her career, and St. Pete High couldn’t be prouder. She is living proof that kindness will always be rewarded in the end. Congratulations, Ms. Green!!
