The results are in! This year’s Goldfever winners were determined to be Key Club for Critic’s Choice, Interact for Fan Favorite, and Leo got Best in Show. But what does the St. Petersburg High School population think about these winners?
For those who don’t know, Goldfever is a lip sync battle taking place in the 3rd quarter of every year between our school’s four service clubs, Rojans, Interact, Key, and Leo, and our newest addition, the school’s color guard team! This year’s theme was style standoff or, better known as, a battle of music genres. Each group spent months planning their performances and practicing choreography to prepare for the battle, which took place on January 24th. All of the teams fought their hardest to win one of the three awards given out, Critics’ Choice, the award given by SPHS alumni acting as judges for the competition, The Fan Favorite, voted by students and parents in the audience, and Best in Show, which is given to the group who had the overall best performance.
Student’s opinions on the winners and performances can be biased due to affiliations with certain clubs or cheering for friends. So, let’s go ahead and break down each performance individually.
We started off the night with an exciting performance from Interact, the winners of Fan Favorite, with a battle between country and pop. Using a range of songs, Interact told a story in their performance, and with the multitude of tricks throughout their dance, you can tell the boys worked hard on their dances. To top off their already thrilling performance, we got an extra surprising guest appearance from a former teacher, Coach G! Overall, it seems Interact took Fan Favorite for a reason, the cheers in the audience throughout their performance nearly made me go deaf! An anonymous junior from the crowd claimed their favorite group was interact since they were so “fun to watch and [were] entertaining” and that they believed their win was deserved. Another anonymous crowd member thought Interact had the best performance since “It was fun to watch [the members of interact] dance for once!”
Next up, we got an incredible battle of rock and pop music from Key Club, the winners of the Critic’s Choice award!! They really rocked the stage with their performance, featuring a variety of great songs from both genres and various props to amplify their performance! We could tell that Key Club had a lot of fun putting their act together and performing it with each other! We got a great surprise appearance from both Mr. and Mrs. Benton that had the crowd going wild! Overall, the audience seemed to love Key Club’s performance, and many agreed with the judge’s choice to give them the Critics’ Choice Award!
Next up was a new addition to the competition, the Color Guard team. Since there are only three awards given out, that leaves two teams going home with nothing, and the color guard team was one of them. But that doesn’t mean they had a bad performance; we believe they put on a super creative and fun show. They used their dance to tell a story of two opposing music genres, putting aside their differences and becoming friends, this extra element of storytelling using narration and cutscenes made their performance stand out for its creativity. For their first time in Goldfever, we believe they did a great job, and the audience seemed to have felt the same way!
Next, we got a performance from our all-girl service club, Rojans. They engaged in a fierce battle of pop vs 2000s rap! We could tell Rojans put a lot of effort into their performance, implementing a range of flips and tricks into their dances and landing almost everyone flawlessly! But sadly, Rojans was also one of the groups that went home without any awards, and this decision has had some mixed opinions. Despite most individuals believing that “all the clubs deserved their wins,” some, like this anonymous student from the audience, also thought that “Rojans deserved better.” Of course, students agree that the teams that did win definitely deserved their awards, but still, a lot of people that we spoke to were also hoping that Rojans would take home an award, too. But, as stated before, just because a team didn’t win doesn’t mean they didn’t give an amazing performance!
Last, but definitely not least, we got an insane performance from this year’s best-in-show, Leo Club! Leo put the work into their performance to create some amazing choreography. They implemented some of their most iconic and impressive tricks into their dances that had the audience stunned. Their use of props throughout their performance added another element of creativity to their performance. Overall, it seems their performance and win were extremely well received by the audience. One anonymous junior stated that Leo was their favorite since “all their choreography was fun and clean.” another student said that “they looked almost professional!” It’s easy to tell that Leo had an extremely impressive performance that completely stole the audience’s heart and, in our opinion, solidified that they were the right choice for the Best in Show award!
All of these groups each had their own amazing performances, and we can tell each club worked hard to put on a good show for St. Petersburg High School. But, In the end, the performance that truly won everyone’s hearts was the one put on by our amazing teachers, Mrs. Koral, Mrs. Vinci, Mrs.Creamer, Mrs. Broughton and Mrs. Saez!
