Tori Penso is the first American woman ever to referee a World Cup Final. She is a source of inspiration to young women worldwide and lives in St. Petersburg, Florida.
“There is nothing quite like a World Cup final. I have done several finals in my career, but I have never done a World Cup final, and to think that these women on this field have worked four years to be able to compete, and someone will be crowned world champion at the end of this match was just an amazing experience,” said Tori Penso. “Not to mention 75,000 people in Australia, all rooting for women’s soccer. It was truly an amazing experience.”
At the age of fourteen, Penso took on her first referee job. “My mom told me to get a job, and all of my friends were babysitting or going to the mall. She suggested I spend some time on the soccer fields. I started just as a weekend gig, got some free cash, put it in my pocket, and actually bought my first car with the money I earned as a referee.” Her hobby turned into a passion and grew as she worked her way up. Penso continued to referee games throughout high school and college.
When asked what her biggest inspiration was as a World Cup referee, Penso responded, “It actually comes from these little kids. Every time I step onto the field, it is an opportunity to pave a path for little girls everywhere, to let them know there is a place for us on the field.” Penso’s words of inspiration, not to mention all of her work as a referee, have shown that hard work truly does pay off. Nothing is out of reach, and sometimes, it may just take more time and effort to achieve your goal.
Penso found her passion right here at St. Petersburg’s Jack Puryear Park, home of the St. Pete Raiders Soccer Club. “There is so much opportunity to learn around you; you have amazing coaches here at St. Pete Raiders, you have amazing coaches in this community.” St. Petersburg has many hidden, inspiring stories infused within it. Tori Penso and her story have played a huge role in this. In fact, Penso had such a positive experience that both her children now play for the Raiders. She encourages not only her children but all players and athletes to keep going.
Madi Hearting, a freshman IB student at St. Petersburg High School who also started her soccer career with the Raiders, finds Penso as a role model. “It is very hard to do both genders in sports, especially with boys, because you have to prove yourself more. Tori Penso made herself known by reffing the final game, and I just love that she never backed down from the opportunity.” Penso’s actions have not only inspired countless people across the world but also students at St. Petersburg High School. Her dedication and perseverance in the soccer community have opened a pathway for women everywhere.
