The Florida Gators men’s basketball team has had a striking year, with a 26-7 regular season record. This record earned them the number one seed for the March Madness tournament. They were expected to be the team to beat, but shockingly lost 73-72 to Indiana, the number nine seed. But what went wrong?
The Gators had a strong lineup, including Thomas Haugh, Xaivian Lee, Alex Condon, Boogie Fland and Rueben Chinyelu. Florida trailed for a significant portion of the game (over 26 minutes), with Iowa building a lead as large as 12 points in the second half. The Gators eventually extended their lead after Iowa overtook it in the second half, to 65-61, with under six minutes left in the game. However, Florida suffered from scoring droughts that prevented them from closing out the game. Following a timeout, Iowa successfully broke Florida’s full-court press, where Alvaro Folgueiras hit a 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left to put Iowa up 73-72. Florida was unable to get a final shot off before the buzzer, ending their run in March Madness.
It was a heartbreaking loss not only for the Gators, but their fans as well. Kena Pennock, a freshman at St. Petersburg High School is a huge Gators fan. Pennock says “I was genuinely shocked at their loss, but glad they had a great season overall.”
Following the knockout, Florida will experience roster shifts in the 2026-2027 season. Xaivian Lee has reached the maximum number of years allowed by the NCAA to play college basketball (four seasons of competition in five academic years). Lee is predicted to be a second-round pick for the NBA, but regarding Florida’s next season, he will not be a part of it. On the flip side, Thomas Haugh is a junior and is projected to be in the 2026 NBA Draft first round-pick. However, he has not officially declared if he will go onto the NBA or continue his college basketball career for another year. Similarly, Alex Condon is also a junior, with no official reports if he will return to Florida for his senior year or enter the 2026 NBA Draft. Following Condon’s position, Rueben Chinyelu is a junior and currently is weighing his options between returning for his senior year or entering the NBA Draft. These major players’ decisions will have a heavy impact for the Gators 2026-2027 season.
The Gator’s upset in the 2026 March Madness tournament marks the end of a season full of promise and talent. With multiple key players moving to pursue professional careers in the NBA, or potentially transferring, the Gators will have to rebuild their team in the 2026-2027 season. While Florida’s March Madness run ended abruptly, it gave way to new potential, and a new era.
